Dinner Parties

It is important for me to address the idea of an active artistic community. To begin this process, I will be a hosting a series of dinner parties in Philadelphia in which I am hoping to find my own group of peers who are interested in making activist artwork.

The dinner parties, which are twofold, will be a time to explore a series of broad questions about the current practice and future of women activist artists and a space to discuss the role of our predecessors. Some of the questions I hope to address are as follows:
  • What is the nature of DIY work and how does it relate to the academy as an art institution?
  • Who determines the value we place on certain types of art?
  • Can art be useful, and if it is does that change its value?
  • What does Philadelphia need that the various non-profits, corporations, and government branches   aren’t addressing?
  • How are local issues being addressed through artistic means?
  • Do these women identify as feminists and what does that word mean to them?
The second part of the process will be to connect these young activist women artists to previous generations of activist women artists, many of whom I have been in contact with this summer. Taking the form of a teach-in, participants will be able to share with the group a women who they find inspiring. Then together, we will collaborate on a DIY history booklet commemorating these women.  Hopefully, it will give us all a greater understanding of where this type of art has come from and allow us the opportunity to create personal connections that can foster larger collaborative projects in the future.
